Fair questions. My name is Kip Hartman. A few years ago, I suffered
the devastating effects of losing my job without warning. This is my story.
A few years ago, I was the top salesman in the country for a nationwide
payroll services firm. In fact, it was the second year in a row that I led
the nation in sales and revenue generated for the company.
And yet, just one year later I was out of a job! The end came without any
warning...
or so I thought!
There was nothing I had done to prepare myself for such a situation.
I didn’t have much of a savings account, and I didn’t have my resume
on the street looking for a better job. My financial stability depended
on earning and receiving that paycheck every two weeks… and it was
suddenly gone!
Try explaining that to a wife and six daughters!
My family and I were in shock, and it took a while to overcome the
financial, professional and personal effects of our overwhelming sense
of loss and betrayal. It took quite a while, but I got myself back in
the game.
Looking back, I realized that the signs that my position was threatened
were there all along, but I had missed them all. Had I known what to look
for at that time I could have taken positive actions, controlled the situation
and avoided the devastation of losing my position.
Since that time, I have studied companies all across America that have
closed plants and laid off employees. I started to pick up on some of the
'industry speak' and other secrets that had eluded me in the past. Things
that I had never noticed before began to jump out at me and
the signs became as clear as glass!
After a while, it became simple to predict with surprising accuracy that a
company would announce a layoff.
